Boat and RV Detailing in Florida: Fighting Oxidation, Salt and Sun

Boats and RVs take more surface abuse than any car we touch: relentless UV, salt spray, humidity, and long stretches parked outside between uses. The good news is that even a badly chalked hull can usually be brought back. Here's what's happening and how we fix it.

What oxidation is

Gelcoat (on boats) and clear coat or fiberglass panels (on RVs) rely on resin at the surface for gloss. UV breaks that resin down, leaving a dead, porous, chalky layer that looks faded and feels dry. Rub a white residue off with your finger and that's oxidation.

What salt does

Salt is corrosive and hygroscopic — it holds moisture against metal fittings, rails, and fasteners, driving corrosion and staining. Left on gelcoat in the sun it also contributes to etching and spotting. Every saltwater outing that doesn't end with a freshwater rinse adds up.

Black streaks on RVs

Those vertical black runs below the roofline are dirt and degraded sealant washing off the rubber roof membrane with every rain. They wipe off early but stain and etch into the sidewall if ignored for months.

The restoration process

A typical boat or RV restoration runs: a thorough wash and degrease; iron and salt decontamination; machine compounding to cut away the oxidized layer; one or more polishing passes to refine gloss; then a protective layer. On heavily oxidized gelcoat we may wet-sand first to knock down the worst of it before compounding.

Light vs heavy oxidation

Light to moderate oxidation comes back with compounding and polishing alone. Heavy oxidation needs wet sanding plus multiple compounding passes and takes far longer. When gelcoat is worn completely through to the fiberglass weave, polishing can't restore it — that area needs re-gelcoat or paint.

Protection is where the value is

Bare gelcoat starts oxidizing again almost immediately in Florida sun. A marine-grade ceramic coating or a quality sealant is what makes the restoration last — it shields against UV, makes salt and grime rinse off easily, and stretches the time between full details from months to a year or more.

A realistic maintenance cadence

Rinse with fresh water after every saltwater trip. Wash the boat or RV every four to six weeks with a dedicated boat soap. Reapply a spray sealant or ceramic booster each season. Book a full machine detail once a year. And store under cover or indoors whenever possible — nothing slows UV damage more.

Don't forget the inside

Closed-up boats and RVs in Florida humidity grow mildew fast. Interiors need vinyl and upholstery cleaning, conditioning of seats and dash, and attention to any musty spots before they spread.
